Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson as the Chillicothe ironworker on February 20, 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy was the eldest of six children. Nancy was inspired by her father's music taste and the records that were played in her family home. It was clear that she wanted to become a performer at the age of just four years old. She began developing her skills by performing in the church choir. While still in high-school the singer was regularly featured on Skyline Melodies. At nightclubs, she began working at age 15. Her first record was recorded in 1956 by Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The band performed with her throughout 1956 and 1957. Nancy began her recording career with Dot Records in 1956, while with the group. Cannonball Adderley encouraged her to move to New York to further her career, and she moved there to The Big Town at the end of the year 1959. Within one month, she got an offer to sing at The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road in The Bronx where Adderley's agent heard her and signed her.
