Nancy was extremely influenced when she was a young girl by the music that her father was a fan of and played at home. As a young girl she had already developed a strong sense of her identity and the things she wanted to be. Church choirs was instrumental in developing her talent. After winning a talent competition on TV at the age of 15 years old, she began to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. The same year, Nancy began working at nightclubs. Nancy was just 17 at the time she completed high school. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - today Central State University - for only one semester Nancy went on to become an experienced performer. In 1956, she made her debut album in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with who she performed on tour between 1956 and 1958. While in the group Nancy released her first record in the studio of Dot Records. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she move to New York so as to increase her chances of success. In 1959, Nancy moved in The Big Town. In less than a month, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative was able to hear her perform and promptly took her on. He signed a contract signing her with Capitol Records in the year 1960. she debuted that year with the single. Guess who? Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. The first was focused on R&B and then, with Adderley's influence, she started to take on jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley joined forces in 1962 and allowed her to climb on the charts. The year 1963 was when she achieved her greatest success by releasing Tell Me the Truth.
