Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah - is an American actress, rapper and a singer. in film, music and television Queen Latifah is the recipient of the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, and Rita teacher in Irvington High School. Latifah's mother and father split when Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, the state of New Jersey. She was also raised through her family's Baptist Church. Latifah is a word that means gentle and generous. The name was given by her cousin to her at the age of 8. Latifah is 5-foot-10" tall power forward on her high school team was always a tall girl. The play she played in her high school Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah began to beatbox with the women's fresh rap group. Latifah was member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the song. He signed Latifah and dropped her debut track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
